What to expect from an Acupuncture treatment
Consultation
On your first appointment, I will take a complete medical history in order to understand as much as possible about your state of health and your lifestyle. Generally, this will involve questions about your current symptoms and any past health problems as well as general questions about how you are sleeping, eating and feeling. You can also expect me to take your pulse on both wrists and have a look at your tongue. If you have a specific pain or injury, I may also need to examine the affected area.
Treatment
Following the consultation, I will formulate a diagnosis and personalised treatment plan that best suits your needs. You then receive a treatment straight away, which typically consists of the insertion of 6-12 single-use sterile needles to stimulate specific acupuncture points. The needles are roughly the thickness of a human hair and the insertion is generally painless. Your treatment may also include the following techniques:
- Moxibustion: The application of indirect heat using moxa (a therapeutic herb) in order to warm muscles, joints or specific acupuncture points.
- Electro-acupuncture: A very low frequency electric current is applied to the needle to increase blood flow, release muscle tension and relieve pain.
- Tui Na: Therapeutic massage to release muscle tension and stimulate acupuncture points.
- Cupping: Glass cups with a vacuum seal are applied to the skin to release muscle tension and improve blood flow.
After-Care
I like to supplement my treatments by suggesting simple lifestyle changes that you can implement straight away that will enhance the treatment's long-term effects.
